**Apologies for cross-posting** EARL Best on the Web Awards 1999 EARL, the Consortium for Public Library Networking, is pleased to announce its 1999 Best on the Web awards. As public library presence on the World Wide Web has continued to develop so much in the last year, we look forward to receiving many nominations! The awards for the best UK public library pages celebrate the best of what UK public libraries are doing on the Web. You can nominate your favourite 3 Websites, which will then go before our expert panel of judges from the LIS community who will make the final decision. When making your nominations you should consider the following (please note that the examples provided below are not an exhaustive list when considering what constitutes a good Website): 1. Information content * Does the content reflect the depth and breadth of the library service? * Is a thoughtfully selected and well-organised collection of links to Internet resources of local interest provided? * Does the Website include locally held digitised collections? (e.g. local history photos or special collections) 2. Interactive features * Does the Website give users the opportunity to 'get involved' through such features as: * a homework club? * an enquiry service? * online debates with MPs and local Councillors? * the chance to submit book reviews? 3. Design and usability * Is the site clearly laid out and easy to navigate? * Is the site imaginatively designed and aesthetically pleasing? * Does the site download quickly? * Does the site follow guidelines laid down for accessibility for people with disabilities? * Is the site 'dynamic'? (i.e. responds to user feedback and is regularly updated with accurate information) A list of public library Websites can be found on the Web at: http://ds.dial.pipex.com/harden/weblibs.html More information about the EARL Best on the Web awards including the winners of the 1997 and 1998 awards can be found at: http://www.earl.org.uk/about/bow.html Please send nominations for your 3 favourite Websites (numbered 1, 2 and 3 in order of preference) telling us what you like about them and why to: Chris Webster ([log in to unmask]) EARL, Fourth Floor, Gun Court, 70 Wapping Lane, London E1 9RL Deadline for nominations: 15th October 1999 ----- Chris Webster, EARL Information Officer, 4th Floor, Gun Court, 70 Wapping Lane, London E1 9RL Tel: (0207) 702 2020 Fax: (0207) 702 2019 Web: http://www.earl.org.uk/ %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
