Recently published from the Geologcial Society, it's first CD-Rom Publication: The BIRPS Atlas II. A second Decade of Deep Seismic Reflection Profiling. (British Institutions Reflection Profiling Syndicate, BIRPS). By David Snyder and Richard Hobbs. Published June 1999. CD-Rom Publication comprising 3 CDs. ISBN 1-86239-1-428 The Atlas explains the rationale, utility and philosophy of BIRPS in its aquisition of deep seismic data for the UK geoscience community between 1989 and 1998. The text and figures show the reader what features and results to look for in data sets. The digital data allow the user to pursue individual interests in greater depth. Numerous references are provided as well as over 120 figures that illustrate the expertise in acquisition, processing and interpreting deep seismic reflection profiles that the group developed over its 18 years. No other national seismic programme has produced integrated text, figures and data as here. This is a highly specialised subject involving costly data aquisition. Its important results are not broadly known and readily available. The CDs will be of benefit to a wide range of geoscientists and useful in general geology courses in both universities and secondary schools. The first CD contains ten chapters of text describing surveys and research results by thematic topics in a format that is fully portable across all computer platforms. The other two CDs contain BIRPS digital stacked sections (SEG-Y format) with location details and software to read them and do basic interpretation of the data on PCs. CD1. Introduction; The BIRPS surveys 1989-1996; Studies of the Caledonian Orogen; Lithospheric structure and evolution at convergence zones; Estimating physical properties of deep reflectors: inversion for seismic velocity; Potential metamorphic assemblages in the continental crust, their velocity and impedance structure; Structure of oceanic crust: the youngest crust and lithosphere; New and improved seismology; Scattered seismic energy-a signal out of noise; Catastrophes recorded in the geological record; References; Bibliography - references from BIRPS Atlas 1.CD2 and CD3. Digital stacked sections (SEG-Y) format and location details with software to display them on nix and PC platforms and interpret the data on PCs. The raw data can be downloaded for interpretation and processing using other software and hardware platforms.CD2 NW Europe including: North Scotland and the North Sea.CD3 NW Europe including: West of Britain and Ireland; Gulf of Bothnia and Baltic Sea; Faeroe-Iceland Ridge; Banda Arc; Chicxulub Impact Crater; Oceanic crust off West Africa.
