My name is Kristin Aavitsland, and I am a Research Fellow at the Norwegian
Institute for Archeology and Art History in Rome. I am an art historian
working on a PhD project on the iconography of a late 13th cent. fresco
cycle in the Roman Abbey of Tre Fontane. Now badly damaged, this monumental
fresco decoration once exhibited a splendid range of allegories and
similtudines related to the earthly life of man, some of them based upon
ideas drawn from 13th century encyclopaedic learning. As I am investigating
the content and the visual language of this unconventional work of art, my
perspective is an interdisciplinary one. I am generally interested in the
connections between text and image in late medieval culture. My
iconographical studies have brought me into the reading of Italian
bestiaries, treatises on natural history and the use of natural history in
sermon literature. If anyone on the list has knowlegde to share with me in
this field, I would be glad to hear from you. My personal e-mail adress is

Best regards from Kristin B. Aavitsland
