Somerset County Council wishes to apppoint two assistant archaeologists.

DEVELOPMENT CONTROL ARCHAEOLOGIST required to monitor
development proposals, advise on their archaeological impact, and
regulate
contracts to ensure the management, protection and recording of
Somerset's
archaeological resource.  Experience of current fieldwork techniques is
essential, and a knowledge of planning and the use of PPG16 an
advantage. A
12 month contract will be offered in the first instance, extensions will
depend on
continued District Council funding.

HISTORIC LANDSCAPE CHARACTERISATION PROJECT OFFICER
required to characterise, and prepare maps of, the landscape of Somerset
and Exmoor National Park. Familiarity with GIS mapping (MapInfo) and the
concepts of landscape characterisation will be an advantage. A 12 month
contract (funded by English Heritage) will be offered but there may be
an
opportunity to continue the project in Devon (Devon County Council).

Both posts are likely to require a degree in archaeology, or a related
discipline, and experience in archaeological project work. Both will be
appointed on scale 5 (up to £16,194). Closing date:- 2 July,
