James Binns's study takes as its central theme the work of Gervase of
Tilbury, author of the encyclopaedic *Otia Imperialia*. It ranges widely
across the Latin culture of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries,
identifying Gervase's sources and describing his methodology. More
than this, however, Binns also addresses the wider issues facing
medieval scholarship today, using the unique challenges facing the
editors of Gervase's work to cast light upon questions as wide-ranging
as the advantages and disadvantages of electronic data retrieval
systems for the study of medieval texts, and the role of Latin in the
curricula of Master's degrees in Medieval Studies.
