At the Performing Arts Data Service we have devised a DC qualifier
standard which allows us to quantify roles and activities without the
need for a huge subject-specific list of authoritative qualifiers. We
deal in digital materials from 5 distinct subject areas and we are
part of a wider Arts and Humanities project which aims to promotote
interoperable DC description throughout the wide variety of subject
areas covered.

Our solution uses a dual numerical and role statement pairing as
follows:

DC.Creator.1= Scott, Francis George
DC.Creator.Role.1 = composer

DC.Creator.2 = Little, Elizabeth
DC.Creator.Role.2 = arranger

DC.Date.1 = 1899
DC.Date.Role.1 = first published

In this way we can deal with the multiple creators and dates often
associated with music, film and other performing arts data without
compromising the integrity of the core elements. We found that the
'Other Contributors' element was not always a useful descriptor for
our resources where it was difficult, if not impossible to define a
single progenitor and we do not generally use this element in our
cataloguing.

We would be very grateful for feedback on our work.
