Journalists are invited to preview three new internet websites at 11 a.m. in the Hank Shannon Room on the 21st Floor of United Nations Development Programme headquarters, One UN Plaza (1st Avenue at East 44th Street), New York. Hans d’Orville, Director of the UNDP Information Technologies for Development Programme (ITDP), will present the sites, which will provide information on human rights, the "Y2K" problem, "e- commerce" with special emphasis on developing countries, and reports on successful development initiatives in dozens of countries. UNDP Administrator James Gustave Speth will officially launch the three new websites at an evening event that will be open to the public and the press at 6:30 p.m. in the Visitors Lobby of the main United Nations building. UNDP created the ITDP in 1997 to raise awareness of the benefits of information and communications technologies for developing countries and to empower poor communities to identify and achieve their development goals. ITDP is part of UNDP’s Bureau for Development Policy. The new websites are designed to be an information "one-stop shop" for development experts, governments, and the private sector. The sites have been combined under an umbrella site, http://www.knowledgebroker.org The sites can also be accessed individually: http://www.undp.org/info21 (UNDP’s main development databank site) http://www.sdnp.undp.org (managed by UNDP’s Sustainable Development Network Programme) http://www.solutions-site.org (a site established jointly by Horizons Communications, UNDP, the UN Environment Programme, the UN Population Fund, UNICEF, the Ottawa-based International Development Research Center, and Yale and Harvard universities.
