Please forward the following information to anyone who may be interested. Jenny The REAL (Reading and Listening Strategies) project has completed two software packages which are being made available electronically free of charge: REAL Reading in Dutch --------------------- REAL Reading in Swedish ----------------------- The following description applies to both programs: The package is designed for use by intermediate learners of Dutch/Swedish as a foreign language, who are intending to pursue their studies in a Dutch/Swedish university. Students using the package will also need a good working knowledge of English to be able to read the instructions contained in the software. The purposes of the package are as follows: * To enable students to develop a range of reading skills in a systematic way in either self-access or supported self-study modes; * To enable students to apply their skills to a range of text types; * To encourage students to assess the quality of their own work. The package consists of several units, each one based on a different text. Each unit contains the following five activities: * Predict * Skim * Scan * Search * Link Feedback is provided in the form of suggested answers, and students are required to assess their own input by comparing their answers with those provided. Students can keep a record of their REAL session in a Notebook file to print out and/or save and take away. Vocabulary and/or glossary support is available for each text. A Find facility enables students to search for occurrences of any word or phrase of their choice within the text. It is anticipated that each unit will provide a minimum of 1 hour's work for a good intermediate student. Please email [log in to unmask] if you are interested in obtaining a copy of the package, which is being made available electronically, free of charge. Forthcoming REAL Deliverables ------------------------------ The following are still in preparation: REAL English for Business and Management REAL English for Social Scientists REAL Reading in Greek Development work on the sound element will continue during 1999, to provide complementary listening activities for REAL packages. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Jenny Parsons Consortium Manager Tel 01482 465872 TELL Consortium Fax 01482 473816 University of Hull Email [log in to unmask] HULL HU6 7RX, UK Web http://www.hull.ac.uk/cti/tell.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------- %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
