PRACTICE-BASED CERAMIC DESIGN PHD THESIS ON CD ROM
Presenting: a unique digital document from The Robert Gordon University:

"Katie Bunnell's practice-based PhD thesis, The Integration of New Technology into Ceramic
Designer-Maker Practice, represents an experiment which reflects the risk taking characteristics of
both creative practice and research, and 'boldly goes' where we haven't been before!"
Professor Carole Gray,
Reader in Art & Design Research, CRiAD

The cross platform CD-ROM format of Bunnell's thesis reflects the practice-based philosophy of her
research: aiming to produce an alternative to the traditional black tome and create an accessible
resource for students, researchers, lecturers and practitioners. This unique full colour digital
document provides direct access to the whole research process, integrating the creation of ceramic
designs, reflections
on practice, and the development of pragmatic arguments which provide
valuable insight into:

1. the creative use of new technology in contemporary craft practices
2. the complex and holistic process of creative craft production
3.the development of a practice-based design research
 methodology which extends 'naturalistic inquiry'
and 'reflective practice'

Potential uses of this unique digital document:
1. craft practitioners -
debate on the creative potential of computer technology;
debate on sustainable practice and environmental issues;
 a review of contemporary design practitioners using new technologies;
examples and evaluations of technical processes
2.undergraduate curriculum development -
 introducing CAD/CAM technologies;
articulating design process;
collating and presenting design research
3. postgraduate and research students in Art & Design -
demonstrating an appropriate research methodology;
presenting a prototype for developing alternative formats for PhD submissions

4.research supervisors and examiners -
structuring and supervising a practice-based research project;
 implications for examining practice-based research projects
