>The Centre for Rural Economy (CRE) is a small social science research
>centre in
>the Department of Agricultural Economics and Food Marketing at the University
>of Newcastle (grade 5 in the last Research Assessment Exercise).  Broadly
>it is
>interested in research that supports the development of a sustainable rural
>economy - its main research areas are agri-environment issues and rural
>development.  Much of its research is closely related to policy; quantitative
>and qualitative methods are used.

>The Post
>
>The Research Associate will be appointed to support CRE researchers in taking
>this agenda forward.  One aspect of the job would be to contribute to a wide
>range of CRE’s interests, in particular through

>§ development work towards large, strategic research applications
>§ help in meeting of short-term project deadlines
>§ aiding the dissemination of research results through publications and
>events.

>The other aspect of the post would involve working on a current project,
Rural
>Microbusinesses in the North of England.  As well as providing general

>The Candidate

>The candidate would need to possess the following:

>§ An MSc or equivalent in a related subject
>§ A knowledge of rural development and agri-environment issues
>§ Experience of undertaking research and analysing the results
>§ Good communications skills, including report writing
>§ A courteous approach: good listening skills and appropriate dress
>§ The ability to work as part of a team, and without constant supervision
>§ A clean driving licence

>We are looking for a researcher who could start work as soon as possible.

>initial contract would be for two years, on the University Researcher grade

>with a starting salary of between £15735 and £18275, depending on age and
