******************************************* CURDS Summer School 1999 Universities and their Regions Newcastle upon Tyne, July 13-17 ******************************************* FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT of a summer school to be held at the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Objectives The summer school is aimed at postgraduates and researchers interested in developing an understanding of the interaction between universities and their regions. It will pursue this topic through two themes. Theme 1: Universities and regional development This theme will extend the debate concerning the contributions which universities make to regional development by going beyond an analysis of the passive and economic impacts of universities. It will examine the role of universities in regional development in a broad range of areas ranging from skills development to cultural innovation and will consider the management implications for both regions and universities. A particular focus will be developing a framework for engagement along the partnership model of territorial governance and development. Theme 2: The virtual university and the region As a consequence of technological developments and a wide range of social and economic transformations, a number of significant changes are occurring in the nature and role of higher education provision. Developments such as the internet are challenging the role of the place-based university in the creation, preservation and transmission of knowledge. As a result, the monopolistic position of many universities in a regional and national context is being supplanted by external education providers who can enter the region and offer courses via mediums such as the internet. Universities are responding to such threats by offering web-based courses around the globe, creating a patchwork of internal and external HE provision in regions delivered by a range of actors. Programme The overall programme will be comprised of plenary sessions, invited lectures, workshops and fieldwork (agency visits). Provisionally, presentations will be given by: Dr David Charles, CURDS Prof. John Goddard, CURDS Prof Kevin Robins, CURDS Prof Steve Garlick, Southern Cross University, Australia Prof. Lena Tsipouri, University of Athens Prof. Dr. Klaus Kunzmann (ERP) Practicalities The fee for participants is £150 (ca. 215 Euro). The fee includes the information package, field trips, catering and refreshments. Accommodation and breakfast is provided for an extra £19 per night per person at one of the University's halls of residence. The summer school will be hosted by CURDS.
