c o n s u m i n g a l t e r i t y
an international postgraduate conference
15-17 October 1999
The Australian National University

Alterity seems to have become the most frenetically produced, contested,
negotiated and consumed cultural position in contemporary
knowledge-productions. A vertiginous proliferation of discourses regarding
postcoloniality, subalternity, and feminism is available for the
consumption of the metropolitan academic. The issues of race, gender,
class, subjectivity and positionality are all intimately linked with
various negotiations of alterity. Some of the important issues that the
conference would like to address are listed below:

* Does the proliferation of alterity discourses trivialise the issues at
stake?
* Is it possible to maintain alterity and still participate in negotiations
of power?
* Does one have to speak from a position of abjectness to represent alterity?
* How does one's location within certain institutions influence one's
knowledge-production?
* Is there any room for identitarian politics after the demise of the
unified subject?

In order to challenge the traditional structures of hierarchisation and
canonicity within academia, the conference will not have keynote speakers.
The conference aims to encourage cutting-edge theoretical debates with an
inter-discliplinary focus: the more contentious your ideas, the better.

Proposals for papers dealing with the theme of the conference are sought
from postgraduates working in the humanities and the social sciences.
Please send in your abstracts (250-300 words) and a brief biographical
sketch by the 15th of May, 1999.
