Financial awareness for the uninitiated

This day has been designed for those new to financial/budget
responsibilities.

How will this event help you?

It will introduce you to financial and business concepts and jargon and will
clarify how budgeting and professional roles integrate in a modern
organisation.

By the end of the day you will be able to:
*	understand the financial planning processes of organisations
*	judge the interaction of your professional and financial roles
*	understand what is meant by a cost centre and cost centre management
*	understand and use basic financial jargon
*	understand the purpose and uses of Service Level Agreements and
internal trading (cross charging) arrangements
*	use budgeting principles in designating financial categories and
targets for that part of the materials fund for which you are responsible.

Who will benefit form attending?

Those moving into management of library/information services, newly
qualified library/information professionals or those re-entering the
profession after a career break.

A pre-course questionnaire will be sent to you before the event to determine
which subject areas you would like to see covered and this will be used to
inform the final programme on the day.

		Implementing the objectives - the cost centre management
approach
		*	Different models of managing service units
		*	Line by line and bottom line cost centre management
approaches
		*	Bottom line cost centre management techniques and
responsibilities

1.0	Lunch
		Materials fund management - policy and practice
		*	Introductory budgeting approaches for the
inexperienced assistant librarian for use in material fund management

3.15	Tea
		Action planning
		*	Tutor facilitated planning - you choose action you
want to take at work and start to plan its implementation
		*	Areas to consider will include:
			Your role in your organisation's budgeting
arrangements
*	Understanding/clarifying senior officers and organisational
expectations of participants
*	Exploring initial materials
*	Fund management policies and implementation plans
