Being a Russianist as well as a Germanist, I enjoy an American list like SEELANGS which has a lot of traffic of a conversational nature and makes me feel I am part of a friendly community. People don't have to be so serious about the medium. SEELANGS is set to 'reply to list', but the delete button is not far away. I positively enjoy the occasional boo-boos, like the long letter describing a certain job candidate's personal peculiarities (whilst at the same time enthusiastically recommending him for the job). OK, keep german studies on 'reply to sender' but loosen up and talk more! Here's my Tip fuer Kenner on how to process your mail quickly: (For those 2 or 4 fingered typists like myself) Move your mouse across to operate it with the left hand. (Good for dexterity (?!), and most non-typists type more with the right hand.) If you're using Microsoft Internet Mail (or other where it's possible) drag your mail buttons to the vertical position on the left hand side of the screen. You can then highlight your messages and go down these using the direction keys with the right hand, meanwhile keeping the mouse pointer over the delete button. As you see the opening few lines of each message, decide there and then whether to keep or delete. If you want to look at a bit more message before deciding, move the mouse about 1cm to the right, click in the text, and scroll down, again using the right hand. (Another reason for using the left hand for the mouse is to avoid getting RSI, which I got more than a twinge of in the right arm, but that's another story.)
