Apologies for cross-posting We have had several enquiries recently from readers who have been using PubMed or Grateful Med about whether they can use the Loansome Doc ordering system through ourselves. Despite looking at the factsheets on DOCLINE provided by the NLM, I am still not clear about how a UK library would join this system - or whether it would be economically feasible to do so. I have e-mailed the NLM interlibrary loans department twice, but so far have had no response. Nor do I know of any other UK library who currently uses the system. I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who knows about the procedures for involved in the system, and the costs and delivery timescales as compared with using the British Library. Some specific questions we have are: 1.) What would it cost us to join and use DOCLINE - is it an annual rate, or "per request" charge? 2.) What would the average delivery times be for UK recipients? 3.) I am not entirely clear how the Loansome Doc system works, despite having looked at the fact sheet - do the readers requests get sent to us as a participating library, using our identification code, and then we send them out to the wider DOCLINE network? Or are they sent directly out to the wider network? 4.) How is the cost of large numbers of requests by readers who have the library ID controlled? Is it possible for the library to assign individual ID s so that readers can be charged directly for their requests? We would be very grateful for any clarification you can give us.
