Dear List Members,

Grading the evidence for environmental health research:

There are some excellent 'levels of evidence' and 'grades of
recommendation' tables for therapeutic/preventive studies and the
Centre for Evidence Based Medicine has helpfully expanded this
system to include studies on prognosis, diagnosis, harm and economic
analysis (http://cebm.jr2.ox.ac.uk/index.extras).

Is anybody aware of an adaption, or a different, system
which assists with the classification of the (mostly observational)
research studies on the impact of society/environment on health.
Many studies are surveys/questionnaires (controlled with similar
groups, 'before and after', or uncontrolled). Some studies
qualitatively measure opinion only while others look at measurable
and verifiable effects on health/quality of life and there is a large
variation in sample size.

I will collate and circulate any suggestions back to these
lists.

Many thanks, Alison Weightman
