A guess: Are you perhaps remembering one of the books of the visions of 
Ven. Anne Catherine Emmerich? _Dolorous Passion of our Lord Jesus 
Christ_, a 4v _Life of Christ_ and a _Life of the BVM_ were popular in 
the middle years of this century.
