Dear Peter,

Both Matlab 4 and 5 run stable under Linux. Both are linked against older C
libraries (libc5). Newer distributions(Redhat 5.x, SuSE 6.0) are based on
libc6 (glibc) BUT also include older libraries. Under these distributions
you need to be careful to link mex files against libc5 and not the default
libc6. The Mathworks have a good technical report page which can be found
using the search item "redhat".
Our own experience is very encouraging. However we have not tested enormous
fixed effects analyses (>4000 scans) under Linux.
If images come from a SUN byte order needs to be swapped.
The new SPM version will also run under Linux and we will provide mexed
files for Linux. The latest kernel 2.2.1 improves performance by a better
memory management and larger swapfiles. Both Matlab4 and 5 run stable under
this kernel in conjunction with SuSE 6.0. SMP is now also supported
properly. However we havn't excessively tested SMP with Matlab.

I hope this helps
