The Fourth International Conference on Fatigue and Transportation
COPING WITH THE 24 HOUR SOCIETY

ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Fatigue Management Alternatives to Prescriptive Hours of Service

March 19 - 22, 2000 (Note this revised date).
Fremantle
Western Australia

The conference dates have been fixed to follow the 6th World Congress on
Sleep Apnoea in Sydney.

THEME
The Conference on non-prescriptive approaches to managing fatigue,
follows from the Third Conference on Fatigue in Transportation held in
Fremantle in 1998. Recommendations from that meeting concluded that
prescriptive work hours were not the appropriate solution to fatigue
management. Other causes of fatigue needed to be addressed in effective
fatigue management systems.

Professor Drew Dawson, University of South Australia,

A Conference theme will be "Strategies for Programme and Promotion
Evaluation".

Transport environments considered will cover road, shipping, railways,
flight and mining. Half of the Conference will be devoted to papers on
these topics, the remainder to workshops tackling solutions to problems in
fatigue management.

There is renewed world wide interest in driver fatigue as a result of
several factors, such as:
¨ a better understanding of the problem and factors contributing to
fatigue
¨ recent developments in non prescriptive approaches to managing fatigue
in Australia, Canada and New Zealand

In Australia, several models of non prescriptive management systems are
being trialed. This issue is also being addressed in other parts of the
world. Much may be learned from research and current practices in air,
rail and maritime transport modalities. The Conference is timely in
re-addressing these issues.

The Proceedings - "Managing Fatigue in Transportation 1998" - of the
Third Conference is published by Elsevier .
