One of the many ways in which liberals and social democrats have screwed themselves here in North America is in ceding the crime issue to the Right, and pooh-poohing the legitimate concerns of those who are most exposed to the possibility of violent crime. This in fact is quite classist, because many of those most concerned about crime are store clerks, cab drivers, elderly persons, and others who present tempting and vulnerable targets to urban thugs, and who have no choice but to live in areas where violent economically motivated crimes against strangers are most prevalent. At least on this continent, the centre/left will have to re-examine its disenfranchisement of this important segment of the electorate if it is to be relevant to groups other than unionised schoolteachers and commie sociologists.
