(Apologies for cross-posting on other lists)
Hello, My name is Dianne and I'm not a new subscriber but thought I
would introduce myself before posting the message below.
I am a public relations and science communication professional. I ran a
scientific library for Cadbury Schweppes Group Research, followed by a
spell as biotechnology information specialist at the British Library.
For thirteen years I worked at the Biochemical Society where I was
responsible for developing their education, careers advice, policy and
media relations activities. I am now freelance, but have a substantial
contract with the Institute of Physics to organise events for their
125th anniversary this year. I am just as interested in scientists'
understanding of the public as in the public's perception of science.
However, the reason for this posting
Baskerville_MTThe

sees the 125th anniversary of the Institute of Physics and the 200th
anniversary of the Royal Institution. As part of their year of birthday
celebrations the two organisations are marking their commitment to
science communication by holding the first science communication
challenge.
On Monday March 15, at the Royal Institution, teams of science
communicators will compete to explain scientific concepts to an invited
audience. Please come along to watch the teams give brief
lecture-demonstrations to demonstrate a scientific topic - for which
they have only been given 40 minutes preparation time. Michael Faraday
himself will step out of history to return to his former home to host
the evening's proceedings. We have teams from the Association of
British Science Writers, students on the MSc Science Communication
course at Imperial College, past winners of the Royal Society's Michael
Faraday Award for science communication and the Institute of Physics.
Teams and guests will arrive at 6.30pm. Whilst the teams go off to
prepare their presentations, we hope that our guests will join us in
the library for a reception to mark the launch of The
Philosopher's Tree: Michael Faraday's Life and Work in His Own
Words. Compiled by Peter Day, previously the Director
of the Royal Institution, this selection gives special insight into
Faraday as a scientist, as a man and as a great communicator of
science to the public at large.
We hope that you will join us for a fascinating and entertaining
evening. There is no charge for admission, but places are limited. If
you would like to come please let the organiser, Dianne Stilwell, know
by telephone (0171 470 4875), fax (0171 470 4848) or e-mail
(0000,0000,00FF[log in to unmask]).
No tickets will be issued, you will be notified if places are
