Brian Whatcott has provided an impressive collection of quotations, which, I assume, are to demonstrate that a timeless agenda is what 'science' is all about. I am sorry if my note was so unclear as to appear as if *I* were presenting my own definition of 'science'. My point all along has been why this is perhaps not a definition to be nailed down. I meant to point my finger at a possible genealogical lineage for the certitude that some commentators expressed on the question. I did not mean to suggest that Descartes' views are my own.
