EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION SPECIAL ISSUE: CONFLICT IN EUROPE - THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA CALL FOR PAPERS. Next year the EJC will be publishing a special issue on the role of the media in the conflict in Kosovo. This conflict has thrown up many acute questions about the role of the media unlike those in previous disputes such as the Falklands/Malvinas or the Gulf. Uncertain loyalties, unexpected outcomes, complex questions of identity, nationality, and alliance, have all confronted journalism and the media with novel and unresolved dilemmas. How have these been managed, what can research show about the relation between communications and conflict in such extreme circumstances? Authors are now invited to submit declarations of interest and an abstract for publication in this special issue. The timetable is as follows Sep 1999 Deadline for submission of abstracts Feb 2000 Deadline for completed manuscripts Sep 2000 Publication Abstracts should be submitted to the European Journal of Communication at either of the following addresses: Prof. P. Golding Dept of Social Sciences, Loughborough University LE11 3TU e-mail: [log in to unmask] Prof. E.de Bens, C/o Dept. of Communication, Rijksuniversiteit, Universiteitstraat 8, B-9000 Gent, Belgium e-mail: [log in to unmask] Abstracts should be no more than 250 words. Final articles will be 6000-7000 words. There are no restrictions on the type of article or approach. However we are particularly interested in empirical or comparative studies, or discussions which take forward our understanding of the role of the media in international conflict. The journal welcomes contributions from authors in any country including those outside Europe. Authors will be advised in October of firm commissions. All submitted articles will be subject to normal refereeing procedures. It is possible articles not published in the special issue may be accepted for publication in other issues. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Prof. Peter Golding Head of Department Dept. of Social Sciences Loughborough University LE11 3TU Tel: (0) 1509 223390 Fax: (0) 1509 223944 E-Mail: [log in to unmask] Website: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/ss/depstaff/staff/golding.htm +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
