I have recently joined the GEM and MCG lists and thought I should
introduce myself. My name is Henrietta Hopkins, I am the Museum
Development Officer at the Museums & Galleries Commission (MGC) with
responsiblity for advising on international links, tourism and visitor
services.

Under my international links remit I try to get as much information as
possible out to museums on international opportunities, including
European funding, and it seems sensible to post information I receive on
these issues to these lists.

The MGC has recently received information from the International Arts
Bureau and the DTI on the Ten-Telecom call for proposals for Generic
Services and Applications. Ten Telecom is a programme run by
Directorate General (DG) XIII of the European Commission. The
information pack states that:

The overall objective of the call is to support projects using Internet
based technology and exploiting a variety of available network
infrastuctures to:

*	spread the use of information technology among European
citizens;
*	improve the competiveness of Europe's SMEs;
*	increase effectiveness of services to the public.

The closing date for applications is 4 June 1999. Of particular
interest to museums is section `T1-2.2 Access to Europe's cultural
heritage', through which the Commission wishes to improve scholarly and
public access to museums and galleries by supporting initiatives such
as:

*	virtual museums and galleries
*	the development of digital cultural content providers
*	intermuseum cooperation and networking on thematic multimedia
exhibitions.

The International Arts Bureau's consultant has recently attended a
conference which discussed Ten-Telecom. Apparently DGXIII have been
disappointed in the standard of applications from museums and galleries
to previous Ten-Telecom calls. They feel that business plans have not
been strong enough and do not express the development of the
trans-European aspect of telematic services. They also think that
issues surrounding copyright and marketing are not being clearly
addressed in applications.

For more information on Ten-Telecom you could attend the UK Information
Day on 26 March at the IBM Conference Centre in London - contact

short notice you might find it easier to visit the DTI's useful website
on European funding programmes for IT at: http://www.ukishelp.co.uk
which has a link to DGXIII's website and the call for proposal itself.

Also we have just received this from Concha Fernandez de la Puente at
DGXIII:

> The first call for proposal for the IST programme was published on 19
> March 1999. This call includes Action Line III.2.3: "Access to
> scientific and cultural heritage". The Call will be open until 15 June
> 1999.
>
> DGXIII/E-2 has prepared a page for the call the digitcult web site:
> http://www.echo.lu/digicult/en/fp5/mrchcall.html. This page contains
> links to the main documents related to the call (official documents)
> and to some partner finding tools that the Commission is making
> available to potential proposers.
>
I hope this is of some help - sorry some of the hyper-links don't seem
to be working.
