As "owner" of the MCG discussion list, in the last 24 hours I have received notification of two messages bounced back because they were not from subscribers. In both cases, fairly soon afterwards, I received personal messages from the same addresses, and they consisted of SPAM - irritating advertising material sent out to millions of e-mail addresses garnered by any means possible. This happens from time to time, and as a preventative measure I have turned off the ability for non-members to search the list of members of this list via mailbase. If anyone gets spam from [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask], please ignore it. Do not respond in any way whatsoever - such action simply confirms to the spammer that you have a valid e-mail address. Any irritation caused should soon go away if everyone does this. My apologies to anyone who is pestered like this as a result of membership of the MCG list, and to anyone who is inconvenienced by the action I have taken to try to stop its recurrence. One of the options that mailbase offers is for the list to be "moderated" - i.e. all messages would have to be approved by me before appearing in your mailbox. I am reluctant to take that step unless there is a real need, but if anyone has strong opinions about it, please let me know.
