1. EEVL site redesign
Do you groan when a service you use updates its interface,
thinking "Oh no! Something else that's new and has to be re-
learnt"? EEVL, the Internet gateway for engineering, has updated
and completely redesigned its Web site, but not to worry - it's very
obvious how the new site works. The new design makes the
purpose of the site much clearer. It looks and feels like a
searchable and browsable guide to engineering resources. There
is one search box, and whatever engineering topic is entered, you
should get results, if not from the catalogue of nearly 5,000
resources, then from the associated search engines covering tens
of thousands of Web pages and newsgroup messages. For more
complex searches, click on More Options. The other EEVL
services, including free bibliographic databases, are clearly
signposted, and a new feature is Hot Links to useful resources.

2. AERADE in EEVL
EEVL is delighted to announce that the Aerospace and Defence
Engineering section of EEVL is now provided by AERADE at
Cranfield University. This section will be rapidly expanding in the
coming weeks, and is the result of cooperation facilitated by the
Resource Discovery Network (RDN) through the EMC Hub. At the
present time, Spacecraft Engineering resources are available.

3. WWW Virtual Library for Engineering
EEVL is now officially also the WWW Virtual Library for
Engineering. This means that EEVL has become the top level for
engineering in the oldest catalogue of the Web, started by Tim
Berners-Lee. The WWWVL is widely regarded as being amongst
the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the Web.

4. New collaboration
rswww.com, Europe's leading distributor of electronic, electrical
and mechanical components, and the Engineering Sciences Data
Unit (ESDU), providers of validated engineering design data, are
collaborating with EEVL in the new site design. EEVL will,
however, remain completely independent.

5. 2.25 million hits
EEVL recently recorded its 2.25 millionth hit!

6. In the coming weeks, EEVL will be expanding and sub-dividing
its browsable subject headings, to make it easier to locate
resources.

7. EEVL Challenge
There is still time to enter the EEVL Challenge
http://www.eevl.ac.uk/challenge/
and win prizes - palmtop computers, £500 worth of Newnes books,
a Web site design package, sweatshirts and posters.

EEVL is funded through the Joint Information Systems
Committee's RDN.
