BBC Online Network: Technology Proving A Work Distraction
A new survey from Pitney Bowes shows that the increasing amount of
technology in use in the workplace is hindering productivity. The report
found that the majority of workers are interrupted by communications
technology every ten minutes.
The report found that in the UK, 58 percent of office workers use voice
mail every day, while 36 percent use the Internet every day. In the US,
the number of office workers using voice mail daily was much higher, 95
percent, while 70 percent use the Internet daily. In contrast, only 32
percent of German workers use voicemail daily, with 45 percent accessing
the Net on a daily basis.
In the UK, 42 percent of those surveyed started to use email in the
previous twelve months, compared to 23 percent in Germany and 31 percent
in the US. The report found that the typical UK worker receives 171
emails per day, half of which is generated in-house. In comparison the
typical US worker receives over 200 emails per day.
Cultural differences indicate a greater prevalence of certain
technologies, as indicated by the much higher use of mobile phones in
the UK, and of voice mail in the US.
The survey was conducted by the Institute for the Future and Gallup for
Pitney Bowes Inc.
