As I am not sure, whether my first attempt to send the following message to the members of the list was succesful, I send it a again today... Dear Colleagues, in January 1998, Halle University Library took over responsibility for the special subject collection "Middle East/ North Africa" from Tuebingen University Library. The change and its consequences have been described in a paper "The Special Subject Collection Middle East/North Africa one Year after the Transfer from Tuebingen to Halle - Problems and Perspectives" presented at the annual meeting of MELCOM International, Liège, 19.5.1999 URL: http://www.bibliothek.uni-halle.de/text/vorträge/ssgliege.htm Currently, we are preparing a project "Virtual Library Middle East / North Africa". An essential part of this project is the creation of a Subject Gateway of relevant digital and printed resources on and from the Middle East. The technical structure will be similar to that of existing subject gateways for other areas of research like that of the special subject guides offered by some of the special subject collections situated at the Lower Saxony State and University Library Goettingen (http://www.sub.uni-goettingen.de/f_fachin.htm), that is providing a link/bibliographical information together with a set of metadata describing formal aspects and contents of the respective sources. There is a number of comprehensive link lists concerning Middle East Studies without additional metadata available already. However we should like to invite colleagues and institutions to join forces to create a structured subject guide Middle East/North Africa providing metadata and other additional information concerning the sources collected. The cooperative realization of this tool is hoped to guarantee a continuing growth of the database in the future. Contributing institutions will be members of the editorial board of the subject guide. A decision concerning our project by the German Research Foundation is expected to be announced in April 2000. If the decision is positive, work on the subject guide Middle East/North Africa could start in Summer 2000. If you or your institution are interested in participating, please contact Dr. Lutz Wiederhold Curator of the Oriental Books Universitaets- und Landesbibliothek Sachsen-Anhalt August-Bebel-Strasse 13 06098 Halle Germany [log in to unmask] Tel.: 49-(0)345-55-22164 Fax.: 49-(0)345-55-27140 -- %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
