Dear All - At the British Council, we are currently developing the ORB service (Online Resource Bank, prototype available at http://192.168.10.5/orb/search.html ) in order to provide a gateway to selected internet resources using the Index+ database (also used by ADAM). The service point will provide access to good resources not only to British Council staff based in Britain, but also to information staff overseas, and to customers of the British Council worldwide. The database has a subject field which allows us to allocate subject headings to each resource. It allows for broad and narrow terms. We are currently attempting to find a subject index / thesaurus which we could either import or input into our database, which would provide a broad base of subject headings for the wide variety of resources the ORB will encompass. We have considered other possibilities - Dewey and LCSH, but these are far to specific for our purposes. Does anyone know if a suitable resource exists? We would not expect ORB to have more than a few hundred subject headings at most, and so by necessity the thesarus would have to be quite general. We have conducted a number of searches on this, and so far can only identify the UNESCO Thesaurus as a possible contender. We would appreciate any advice which could be offered, or contact from anyone with similar experiences.
