     `GATEWAY TO KNOWLEDGE'

A study day to mark the centenary of the printed British Museum
General Catalogue organised by The British Library and Birkbeck
     College, University of London

     Saturday 27 November 1999
at The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB

Inspired by the 100th anniversary of the first printed catalogue of
the British Museum Library, this study day will probe the history and
principles of the early catalogue, the process and tribulations of
revisions, and the future of catalogues in the digital age. The day
will be of particular interest to those who have worked with the BM
and BL catalogues over the years to pursue research in the British
Library and in libraries around the world. Questions and contributions
from the audience will be welcome.
