     MAKING EFFECTIVE APPLICATIONS TO FUNDING BODIES: TWO BRITISH LIBRARY
     WORKSHOPS

     These one-day workshops, organised under the auspices of the British
     Library's Co-operation and Partnership Programme, are intended for
     those wishing to know more about how to apply for funds from the
     various funding bodies and sources available.

     The workshops will be run by Roy Sully who, as a qualified librarian
     and experienced fundraiser, was formerly Head of Development Office at
     the British Library. Roy is also currently revising "A guide to
     additional sources of funding and revenue for libraries and archives".
     The courses will equip participants with the knowledge and confidence
     to make effective funding applications, not only to the British
     Library but also to other funding organisations. The workshops will
     be relevant to a wide range of institutions, not just to those working
     in libraries, although where possible examples will be drawn from the
     library and archive world to illustrate the principles being taught.
     The workshops will include the following:

     * principles of good fund-raising
     * project definition
     * project management
     * developing an effective case
     * project costing and budget control
     * working with a partner organisation
     * research and writing skills
     *  acknowledging donors
     * project monitoring

     There will be two workshops:

     at The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London on Friday 8th October
     at Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, on Friday 15th October

     Each workshop will begin at 10.15am (registration) and finish by
     4.00pm. There will be no charge for attendance. Because places are
     limited, and demand anticipated to be high, there will be a maximum of
     2 places allowed per institution. Lunch/tea/coffee
     will be provided. Once a place has been allocated to you, please let
     us know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend.

     Please fill in and return the form below to: Colin Day, Co-operation
     and Partnership Programme, Fourth Floor, The British Library, 96
     Euston Road, London NW1 2DB by 24th September, 1999. (Or email
     completed form to: [log in to unmask])
