Subject: Monitoring usage of electronic journals

Dear all,

I think this may be an old chestnut, but if anybody has found an answer to
it I would be very grateful to hear it.

As electronic journals usage increases, the need for some kind of usage
measurement is becoming more and more important. There are many different
access routes for users (e.g. library web pages, library catalogue, bookmark
from own PC, NESLI etc.). I envisage that what is needed is some kind of
monitoring device on the organisation's intranet that detects and counts
every outgoing link to an electronic journal. Is this fanciful, or is there
perhaps some such clever device already out there, just waiting for me to
discover it?

All suggestions, ideas, comments and experiences gratefully received.

Su Lockley
Senior Librarian, CCLRC
