Actually, healthcare libraries do not pay necessarily that brilliantly
either. From one careers' guide I browsed some time ago NHS librarians were
among the most poorly paid (though thankfully much better - in my present
position following a recent upgrade - than the 9K being banded about). Still
18K (not my present salary) seems respectable enough though someone thought
it rather low. 
Like Amanda said, 9k is better than the alternative. Furthermore I know of
some graduate lab staff at this Trust who as trainees were on 8K!! So, it's
not just recently qualified librarians who get a raw deal.
