I am pleased to report that an agreement resolving the longstanding maritime
boundary dispute between the UK and the Faroe Islands will be signed next
week. The agreement defines both a continental shelf boundary and a
fisheries boundary, along with a "Special Area" in which both countries will
continue to enjoy fishing rights. The Special Area encompasses the large
banana-shaped area to the south of the Faroes which was previously subject
to overlapping fishery zone claims.

The text of the draft agreement has been published in English on government
web sites in both countries. The Faroese site also includes maps showing the
two boundaries and the Special Area.
