"Hanish Resolution Paves Way for Cooperation," Minister

Eritrea's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ato Haile Woldensae, held a briefing
with members of the diplomatic community and journalists yesterday. Ato
Haile gave details on the outcome of the arbitration process and the awards
regarding the maritime boundary. Ato Haile reiterated "the government of
Eritrea's commitment to fully comply with and to implement the decision with
immediate effect." He said, "The decision by both parties not only to solve
their border dispute by peaceful and legal means but also to submit, in good
faith, to an arbitration procedure as well as, once an award was given, to
honor the impartial decision of third parties will surely be remembered in
the coming years as a good example of international conduct by states."

The minister noted that "the legal settlement of the dispute will not only
pave the way for a harmonious relationship between the littoral states of
the Red Sea but also opens a new window of opportunity for the consolidation
of peace and stability in the region and the creation of a zone of peace,
development and mutual benefit." Ato Haile thanked all the parties involved
in the legal resolution of the matter and concluded by declaring that
"Eritrea has always been--and will continue to be--committed to the creation
of a salubrious regional environment which will foster and promote
good-neighborliness, peace and cooperation between neighboring states based
on international principles and norms."
