School of Applied Geology, Curtin University of Technology, Perth,
Western Australia
(Fixed term – 3 years) Ref: 3305

The School of Applied Geology through the Centre of Excellence in Mass
Spectrometry seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to establish and operate
the West Australian Argon Isotope Facility. This state of the art argon
laser facility is a collaborative research initiative by Curtin
University and the University of Western Australia and has received
major equipment funding from the Australian Research Council.

The facility will complement existing SHRIMP and TIMS instruments at
Curtin University, and will also provide age data for the palaeomagnetic
laboratory at UWA. The facility will enable new projects to be
undertaken on a range of geoscience topics in the ARC-supported
Tectonics Special Research Centre (TSRC) located at the UWA and Curtin
University and in the Centre for Strategic Mineral Deposits (CSMD) at
the UWA, as well as a variety of programs related to regional tectonics,
structural and metamorphic geology and mineralization. The Argon
Facility will also provide a strong basis for enhanced collaboration
with industry, who already contribute significantly to research efforts
within the State.

We are looking for a person experienced in argon geochronology and in
particular in maintaining and running a noble gas mass spectrometer with
UV and IR laser-based extraction system. The successful applicant will
be responsible for establishing the laboratory, ensuring its ongoing day
to day operations, collaborating with researchers wishing to use the
facility, and developing an active research program in argon
geochronology.

All applicants are expected to hold doctoral qualifications and to have
demonstrated research experience in argon geochronology.
