The Institute of Mineralogy and Petrology at the University of Bonn
offers a PhD position (BAT IIa/2; c. DM 1700 after tax) being part of a
research project on the "Lithology and geodynamical evolution of the
Kerala Khondalite Belt (KKB), southern India".

Two field trips to India, the first of which already starts at the
beginning of October this year, are aimed at obtaining a detailed
knowledge about the lithology in the eastern and southern
part of the KKB and the Achankovil Shear zone (which forms
the northern boundary of the KKB) as well as the structural evolution of
the rocks during the
Pan-African orogeny. Detailed petrological, geochemical and
geochronological investigations of gneisses and leucogranites should
improve the understanding of the P-T-t evolution of these rocks during
the Pan-African high-grade metamorphic event. A correlation of these
results with data from Sri Lanka,
southern Madagascar and Antarctica will help to better
characterize the position of the KKB within Gondwana at the end of the
Proterozoic.

Laboratory work will include petrological and geochemical investigation
of gneiss and granite samples on the whole-rock and mineral scale as
well as radiogenic isotope work which will be carried out at the
University of Muenster.
The project takes place in cooperation with Dr. Michael Broecker
(Geochronological Laboratory, University of Muenster) and Prof. Leo
Kriegsman (University of Turku, Finland).

Applicants should have a "Diplom" degree (roughly equivalent to the
masters degree)
in Geosciences and a basic knowledge of microprobe and geochemical
analytic techniques. He or she should be familiar with magmatic and
metamorphic processes
in the lower continental crust and be able to bear the Indian climate
(which we sometimes also have in Bonn during summer).

Those who are interested please contact me as soon as possible.
