D Position ********************** One position for carrying out research towards a Ph.D degree is available immediately at the Institut fuer Mineralogie at the Ruhr-Universitaet-Bochum, Germany. The research topic should be in the broad area of application of kinetics/thermodynamics to geological/planetological problems with an emphasis on quantitative methods. Current research activity spans the range of experimental, theoretical (numerical modelling) and field/analytical methods; individual projects may be restricted to one of these areas or combine different sub-fields. The candidate can bring in his/her own ideas or projects or be incorporated in ongoing research programs. The Institut is very well equipped with a variety of experimental equipment (piston-cylinder apparatus, hydrothermal bombs, internally heated gas vessels, gas-mixing furnaces) as well as analytical facilities (XRD machines, electron microprobes, SEM, XRF, NMR etc.) which are supported by excellent workshop and sample preparation facilites. The planned Sonderforschungsbereich on "Rheology" will define a focus of research activities at the Institut (though the Ph.D project need not be related to this) in the coming years - this program involves scientists from Mineralogy, Geology and Geophysics as well as from various engineering faculties. This, along with the newly planned combined curriculum on "Geosciences" (rather than the traditional subdivisions of Geology, Mineralogy and Geophysics) is expected to promote strong interdisciplinary ties.Continuing collaborations with other Institutions in Germany and abroad allow access to a variety of facilities not located in the Institut itself. Such collaborative work can allow the candidate to gain experience of working in other labs/countries and get acquainted with various work cultures.
