I've just come back from a quick 3-day break in Normandy to find the list
exploding with messages.

Just to clarify the point on membership. Although this list is called 'gem'
it is not a list reserved for gem members. At it says in the introduction,
the list is 'for discussion of issues in museum education in the UK, in
particular the use of IT, learning in and from museums, and related
research'. Anyone with those common interests in museum education in the UK
is welcome to join. There is an international (though predominantly
American) list museum-ed and other countries are also getting their museum
education communities together online (Canada is a good example).

As far as I am concerned galleries are a type of museum, although it might
have been better with hindsight to refer to 'museum and gallery' education
in the list description. There is, of course, nothing in principle to stop
someone setting up a specialist list for gallery educators to complement
this list. If that happens it would simply be worth clarifying the precise
intended coverage of the two lists, since they'd inevitably overlap
substantially.

While I'm writing, may I just remind people not to send file attachments to
the list - many people have problems with receiving them from e-mail lists.
If you have a significant file that you'd like people to be able to see you
can either send a message to the list asking people to request it from you
if they want or, if it is likely to be of very widespread interest, ask me
if I would post it on the website (as I did with the GEM NC response
recently).
