In reply to Sr. Speranza's suggestion that Barbara Allen was a prostitute, let me say that the "Scarlet Town" text upon which he replies is just one of four variant types, three of which make no reference to that locale. (Does that mean that she is a whore only one fourth of the time?) Furthermore, "Scarlet Town" is slang for Redding, I am told. I feel Barbara's occupation remains unsettled.
