Having recently taken up a new position here at
Wolverhampton Archives and Local Studies I was surprised to learn that we cannot
supply printouts from microfilms of post 1837 marriages registers. We have
been advised by the Office for National Statistics that the Marriage Act 1949,
section 63, determines that information may only be supplied from marriage
registers in the form of a certified copy of the entry. I am sure in my
previous experience in county record offices that microfilm printouts have been
provided since the late 1980s. Can any office which does supply printouts
shed any light on how they are not in conflict with the Marriage
Act?
