MERSEYSIDE LOCAL GROUP OF THE ROYAL STATISTICAL SOCIETY Date: Tuesday 2nd March 1999, time 5pm (tea at 4:30) Venue: University of Liverpool, room 2.11 (Maths and Oceanography Building) Speaker: Matt Reed (Unilever) Title: Three dimensional measurement in microscopy Abstract: This talk introduces the stereological approach to microstructural quantification from microscopic images. Stereological methods of structural analysis use geometrical probes to quantify three-dimensional (3D) spatial architecture. The methods are based on two key ideas: (i) an acknowledgement of the need for correct sampling of the material of interest and (ii) the fact that in many circumstances reliable estimation of 3D properties can be obtained from measurements made on 2D sections. The talk will be illustrated with examples culled from the author's research and from paradigm papers published in the literature. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prior to the seminar, there will be tea in the tea room on the 3rd floor of the Maths and Oceanography Building. Maps and/or parking permits available on request from Helen Wilson ([log in to unmask]). %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
