Business School, University of Hertfordshire.

Pauline Rogers (Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre,
Public Health Laboratory Service)

Title: "Survival from AIDS diagnosis in UK Adults"

Abstract:

"Diagnoses and deaths of HIV and AIDS are reported to the PHLS HIV&STD
Centre on a voluntary confidential basis. The vital status of these cases
is updated annually from ONS death reports, the PHLS survey of prevalent
diagnosed HIV infections, and the PHLS and Scottish surveys of laboratory
reports of CD4 counts. Periodically AIDS cases not known to be dead are
actively followed up with the reporting centres to ascertain the current
last known alive date or dates of death which have not been reported
previously. There are separate surveys for England & Wales and Scotland -
the most recent surveys were undertaken between October 1997 and March
1998.

"Data is currently available on 14103 adult AIDS cases diagnosed by the
end of 1996 and reported by the end of June 1998.

"The results from fitting proportional hazards models to some of this data
will be reported and the problems encountered in analysing this data at a
time of rapid changes in the epidemiology of HIV and AIDS in the UK will
be discussed."
