                THE INSTITUTE OF CANCER RESEARCH
             (University of London) Sutton, Surrey

               Clinical Trials & Statistics Unit
                    Section of Epidemiology

                     Medical Statistician
                       17,886 - 23,969

The Institute of Cancer Research together with the adjacent
Royal Marsden NHS Trust, is one of the world's leading
cancer research centres. Current areas of research within
the Section of Epidemiology include the design and analysis
of large randomised trials of cancer treatment, papilloma
viruses and cervical cancer, asbestos and mesothelioma,
childhood cancers, and genetic susceptibility. More
information about the ICR and the department can be found
on our web page (www.icr.ac.uk).

Applications are invited for a statistician to join the
Clinical Trials & Statistics Unit (CTSU) to work primarily
on a large ongoing international trial evaluating the
benefits of combination systemic therapy in early breast
cancer (UKCCCR Adjuvant Breast Cancer (ABC) Trial). Since
the trial launch in 1993, over 3000 patients have been
entered from 10 countries (Egypt, India, Iran, Malta, New
Zealand, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and
UK). Accrual is expected to be completed within the next 2
years and data for analysis is maturing. You will work
closely with the trial co-ordinator and will be involved in
all aspects of data handling, statistical analysis, trial
management and trial promotion necessitating travel within
the UK and abroad as appropriate. You will give consulting
advice to clinical colleagues and develop new studies.

Applicants should have a postgraduate qualification in
medical statistics or epidemiology with a strong
preference given to those candidates with relevant
experience. Experience with clinical trials and survival
analysis are essential and efficient programming skills (in
SPSS, STATA, EGRET) would be a distinct advantage. You will
need to be able to work well within a team environment and
have the ability to communicate statistical concepts to
health professionals.

We offer a non-smoking environment, subsidised on-site
canteen, subsidised creche facilities (depending on
availablility) and corporate membership to all ICR sporting
and social facilities (including aerobics, squash, tennis
and swimming).
