However if the student is claiming illness has affected performance in assessments or prevented their attendance at examinations or caused them to miss assessment deadlines we require a medical certificate. Some staff and students are not very happy about this, because of the charge, but I see no alternative. That's the formal position, but I can't say for certain that attendance is monitored vigorously in all departments. If assessments are not affected, I guess there's scope for some leeway.
