Colleagues will be aware that the above Commission was set up in 1997 and
launched by Jack Straw in 1998 to consider the development of Britain as a
multi-ethnic and multi-faith society and to make recommendations for the
future.  A report will be finalised within the next 4 months and published
in May/June 2000.

The Chair of the Commission, Professor Bhikhu Parekh (also a member of CUCO)
is currently seeking views on a number of issues. If any colleagues would
like to make any comments /views /evidence on the following issues can you
please send directly to the Commission , 133 Aldersgate Street, London EC1
4JA.

1.	Views on the vision of Britain in relation to political and social
issues and in terms of people's sense of identity and belonging including
cultural and religious diversity, pluralism in private and public life, and
international human standards.

2.	In relation to public policy and the processes of policy making and
decision making, (a) what are the current issues and problems (b) to what
extent and in what ways are current government policies/initiatives engaging
with the issues and problems (c) what practical recommendations should be
considered for improving or changing current policies.  There is likely to
be a chapter on education.

3.	The final part of the report will set out broad approaches to the
management of change in public institutions and will be concerned with
various issues including tackling institutional racism, power-sharing,
accountability, the mainstreaming of equity and diversity issues,
monitoring, staff training and development.
