Everyone,

Check out British Medical Journal, January 30, 1999. "Sharing decisions
with patients: Is the information good enough?"
Great points: Lots of the stuff in our patient ed materials isn't
"relevant" to patients (although it may be relevant to health professionals),
many materials are patronizing, materials must start with needs defined by
patients, patients must participate in development of materials, the quality
(i.e., usefulness/practicality) of the information is more important than the
medium, patients are tired of "didactic" style, patients want more empowerment
tips and ideas for self-help, patients want more balanced approach, patients
want quantitative information and "honesty" -- and more!

My belief: We simply must stop guessing what people want to know. We
need to ask recent patients what they wish they'd known/could have found out,
listen with full attention, and use THIS information to develop materials for
future patients.
Also, patients are not just looking for information; they are looking for
comfort and support. I think they can only get this from hearing/reading other
people's stories.
In our new products, we are including 15 to 50 word "stories" from recent
patients. Try it!

blessings,
carol garzona
