UNIVERSITY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAMME

Your chance to progress your career as part of a world-leading research
team at the University of Leeds.

The University places high value on its status as a Research University
and, in order to enhance research quality and assist in the development
of a research culture, has established a University Research
Fellowships Programme aimed at attracting dynamic and promising
researchers on the threshold of an outstanding academic career.  1999
is the third year of recruitment to the Programme, with 24 appointments
having been made in earlier years.  Six faculties participate in the
scheme.  Some have selected specific fields of study for this year's
programme; others invite applications from across the field of research
interests.

If you have established a track record of high quality research and are
interested in a career in academia you are invited to apply for a
University of Leeds Research Fellowship (available from October 1999)
from among the following areas:

URF99/1     Communication Studies:- European Political Communications
in the area of Race, Media and Social Movements

URF99/2     Education:- Teaching and Learning Science to Underpin
Lifelong Learning

URF99/3     Business School:- Relationship Marketing and Strategic
Alliances

URF99/4     Geography/Transport Studies:- Landuse, Transport and
Planning

URF99/5     Biology:- All Areas

URF99/6     Biochemistry and Molecular Biology:- All Areas

URF99/7     Mathematics:- Applied Analysis  - Wavelet Theory and Non-
Linear Analysis

URF99/8     Computer Science:- Interdisciplinary Applications

URF99/9     Civil Engineering/Materials:- Solid State NMR in
Engineering Materials

URF99/10    Mechanical Engineering:- Design and Manufacture Integration

URF99/11    Medicine:- All Areas - Specifically: Application of
Molecular Biology; Molecular Vascular Medicine; Medical Imaging/Health
Informatics

URF/99/12   Skeletal Tissues Group (with Physics):- New Surface
Technologies as Applied to Biological Interfaces

URF/99/13   Healthcare Studies:- Dissemination and Implementation of
Research in Healthcare

URF/99/14   Psychology:- Qualitative Research Methods

URF/99/15   Nuffield Institute for Health:- Professional/Managerial
Relationships Including Clinical Governance

University Research Fellowships:

* are normally offered on Research Grade II (u21,815- u29,048), but may
be more senior for particularly outstanding applicants;

* will be available for up to five years in the first instance, but
will normally lead to permanent appointment;

* may be supported by development grants of up to u30,000

* are exempted from teaching and administrative duties in the early
stages.

Appointees will have an excellent record of research achievement and
will be expected to make a significant contribution to the research
profile of their department and the University. Full support for career
development will be provided.
