Netskills Workshop:
The Internet: Your Research Library

09:30 - 16:30 Wednesday 8th December 1999 University of Newcastle

The Dearing report recognises the importance of
electronic information and delivery in education,
particularly using networked resources such as the
World Wide Web. A wealth of resources and techniques
now exist which serve as a source both for exciting
examples of new teaching practices, as well as easily
accessible methods for adoption into everyday teaching
and learning.

This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide
Web who would like to understand more about how the
Internet can be used for teaching and learning. The
workshop aims to introduce and explore some of the
tools and techniques using in Internet-based teaching.

It is suitable for researchers and academics from any
discipline, librarians and computing service staff.

Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.

Topics covered will include:
 * online tutorial courses and distance learning facilities
 * an introduction to videoconferencing
 * using interactive simulation on the World Wide Web
 * delivering information such as lecture notes via the Internet
 * searching for teaching resources on the Internet
 * using subject-based gateways
 * using email, discussion lists and newsgroups as teaching resources
 * simple self-assessment techniques

By the end of the workshop participants will have:
 * seen examples of how the Internet is being used for teaching
   purposes
 * explored online teaching and learning resources in a variety of
   academic subjects
 * had experience with different online courseware
 * examined some of the techniques used in distance learning and online
   tutorial courses on the Internet, including self-assesment tools
 * had an opportunity to discuss the issues involved in Internet-based
   teaching
 * searched the Internet for teaching related resources
 * gained an awareness of videoconferencing technology
 * investigated online discussion environments

Workshop Requirements:
Participants need no special technical skills and no prior
knowledge of the Internet; however, basic computer skills
such as using a mouse and keyboard are essential. In
addition, experience of using Microsoft Windows for
opening and saving files and opening and closing
applications (e.g. a word processor) would be helpful.

The cost of the workshop is £ 105 for participants from higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
A copy of The Internet Users' Guide to Network Resource Tools (2000
