Netskills Workshop:
Dynamic Web Pages with JavaScript

09:30 - 16:30 Tuesday 19th October 1999 University of Newcastle

Many people now have the basic skills to develop simple Web pages
using HTML. Having produced these pages which are attractive and
functional, authors would like to progress to more dynamic and
interactive content. Examples include reacting to user mouse and
keyboard actions, configurable pages and local processing of data,
most of which are beyond the capabilities of HTML. JavaScript
provides a simple extension to HTML which is easy to learn and can
quickly produce sophisticated and effective results. Anyone with a
basic knowledge of HTML can enhance the potential of their Web site
for teaching, learning, marketing and general information provision
using Java Script.

This is a practical workshop for World Wide Web authors. The
workshop focuses on the issues and practical aspects of designing
and creating JavaScript-based Web pages. Whilst it may be attended
as a stand-alone workshop, it also follows on from the popular
Netskills workshop "Authoring on the Web", and is a natural
companion to the Netskills workshop "Creating Interactive Web
Pages".

Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.

Topics covered will include:
 * gaining a basic knowledge of JavaScript
 * adding interactivity to Web pages
 * examples of JavaScript in action
 * the concepts of actions and events
 * JavaScript functions and variables
 * dynamic images
 * manipulating forms with JavaScript
 * overview of standards and browser compatibility
 * controlling browser behaviour
 * overview of interfacing with Java Applets and plugins

By the end of the workshop participants will...
 * explored a variety of interactive JavaScript techniques
 * investigated a number of examples of use of JavaScript on the Web
 * developed JavaScript-based Web pages
 * integrated JavaScript with Web forms
 * created JavaScript functions and variables

Workshop Requirements:
Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web
through a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer and MUST
have authored simple Web pages using HTML. Knowledge of basic
HTML tags such as those for including images and hypertext links is
essential. An awareness of how to create Web forms would be useful.
Experience of using Microsoft Windows for opening and saving files
would be helpful. Note that this workshop does NOT require
programming skills from participants, and is not designed to provide
comprehensive programming competency.

The cost of the workshop is £ 105 for participants from higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
